In May of 2006, a mixed battalion was deployed to Dili-Timor Leste to ease the countries political and military tensions. After the initial deployment things were very busy, to say the least. All arms of the defence force were tasked heavily with the job at hand.
Being part of the 3rd battalion Royal Australian Regiment, The Airborne Battalion, our unit was the governing force of the initial deployment. The stabilisation of the local Dili area started. After a while I was posted to a little rural town out side of Dili.
The first couple of days were sleeplessly busy. Then a break through! We began to receive the cooperation with the locals we had all been working towards. This allowed us a little down time. With no phones and only so many card games and competitions to create (like “the worst moustache you’ve ever seen in your life comp!” I won!), we eventually were forced to think of the choices we would need to make when we got home.
Education Is the Key
After requesting The Investors Club book and other information be sent over, I began the task of educating myself in investment property. Up until this stage I had left all my property management to my partner and other family members to run for me, because “I had no time to do it”.
Using a newly delivered telephone I embarked on several hundred phone calls to my wonderful Branch Manager Carolyn Przial. I held very basic workshops and one on ones with the other soldiers, who were also interested in investing their hard earned Timor cash in something other than a shiny new car.
I had already bought through the Club the year prior, but this time around, things made a lot more sense. I finally understood the concepts! With the penny finally dropping, I decided I wanted another property…and FAST! Within weeks I was buying my second property through the Club on the Gold coast. In my immediate deployment situation it would have been impossible to achieve the purchase of this property without the fantastic support of the Club, and the dedicated staff whose efforts are well in need of a medal.
A Second Chance
In the past I have had a harsh introduction to the world of “personal leveraging” as a young teenager. Bankruptcy eminent, I began receiving threatening letters from Banks, promising all kinds of nastiness. I needed change, guidance and job security… The Army’s a great place to start, so I joined.
At the time I believed my job was the best support and structure I could possibly get.
I was wrong! There was a completely different level that would give me “My Second Chance.”
I was introduced to the Club through my partner, and since then my life has changed dramatically. The Army was a great start, but The Investors Club gave me something better, the second chance I deserved! I now have the ability to choose the direction of my future due to the financial freedom I will create through property investment.
My deployment to Timor was a fantastic experience, but as a Young Investor it really gave me the wake up call I was due for. Because of this and past “educational” experiences I have decided to become a Support Member in the hope of giving other Young Investors the second chance they deserve.
